FIELD NOTE 001 · EIGHTY-NINE PAGES AND ONE ACTUAL HUMAN

Inside the Notebook · A Full Color Press Series

Field note · October 16, 2026

I would like to introduce you to a man who may or may not know he has been represented by several artificial intelligence systems.

For privacy, we'll call him The Podcast Guy.

The Podcast Guy has a real job. I hired him to help me secure three podcast interviews.

Perfectly ordinary arrangement.

I then spent a morning using artificial intelligence to assemble an 89-page working media plan explaining the memoir, the research, the proposed public inquiry, the possible audiences, the signature essay under construction, and why the order in which strangers encounter my story might matter.

Eighty-nine pages.

For three podcasts.

Naturally, I wanted to know what he might think.

So I asked AI to imagine his reaction.

It obliged.

In fact, the machines produced increasingly elaborate versions of The Podcast Guy encountering my email. One fictional version seemed impressed. Another was bewildered by the scope. Another wondered whether he had accidentally agreed to represent the Warren Commission.

For the record, none of these men existed.

There was one actual podcast professional. He had not supplied these reactions.

The machines had supplied language representing what he might think.

And the distinction matters.

Because I was not merely asking AI to draft an email anymore. I was using language to rehearse possible social encounters, anticipate objections, develop an understanding of my audience, and decide what to do next.

The imagined reactions became material for my next act of thought.

Then I asked the machine to analyze that process.

And then I noticed something else.

The experiment was continuing inside the very activity of trying to communicate the experiment to the world.

The machine could generate a professional audience. It could generate encouragement, skepticism, strategic advice, and imagined consequences.

It could not supply The Podcast Guy's independent judgment.

That would have to come from The Podcast Guy.

And when it does, I may learn something none of the fictional versions anticipated.

For now, the notebook contains a real objective, an actual working document, generated representations of a prospective reader, and my decisions about which representations to take seriously.

It does not contain evidence of what that reader actually thinks.

That's the view from over here.

The room looks crowded.

I'm still waiting to hear from the person I invited into it.

SOURCE STATUS: This field note records a real objective, a real working document, and AI-generated representations of a prospective reader. The imagined reactions are generated material; they are not evidence of what the actual person thinks. No reply from him is included here, and none has been received.

REPRESENTATION ≠ THE PERSON.

THE NOTEBOOK REMAINS OPEN.

What would you ask differently?

You've seen the author's question, the machine's response, and the human decision. Now take the question somewhere else.
