The Bar That Wasn't There

Ten drinks. One impossible room. A question the machine cannot answer alone.

Complete illustrated specimensKathleen C. ThompsonOctober 2026

A friend walks into a bar that does not exist and asks the only question that matters: is she okay? What answers him is a machine with an apparently unlimited capacity for explanation, a bartender with a working theory of judgment debt, and — drink by drink — a room that keeps filling with people who were never consulted.

A note on the illustrated edition

This working edition preserves the manuscript text without rewriting its dialogue, prompts, disclaimers, afterimages, or transitions. Original episode labels, repeated recap material, and draft inconsistencies are intentionally retained.

All characters and scenes within the bar are fictional and AI-generated; the work does not represent independent reviews, corporate responses, or research validation.

The standing question
The machine can generate a crowd. It cannot generate the independence of the crowd.

The room looks crowded before anyone arrives. The bar was invented. The question was not.
